Nano-scientists develop new kind of portable water purification system, could bring clean water to rural poor

A water purification system that uses nanotechnology to remove bacteria, viruses and other contaminants may be able to deliver clean drinking water to rural communities for less than $3 a year per family, according to a new study.

Researchers at India’s Institute of Technology Madras have developed a new kind of portable water purification system based on nanoparticle filtration. In their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team explains how their new device does its job—it employs nanoparticles to remove not just biological hazards, but toxic heavy metals as well. The system they have developed is a two-stage filtration process that provides 10 liters of clean water in just an hour’s time.

How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA? I dealt with Sarah for organizing the work. Sarah was very professional

ABroaderView‘s insight:

Michelle: "From the minute I began to plan this work with my first emails to ABV to my time at the Reserve, I will say that the whole experience was very enjoyable and exciting. I have spoken to those at home about my experience at the Reserve and with ABV and I hope I have generated the interest of others here at home to do what I did. I would love to do this work again. Thanks".

My Favorite Memory: My favorite memory was teaching the girls Michael Jackson´s Thriller dance. They loved it! I was surprised that…. The Spanish

ABroaderView‘s insight:

Alana, Orphanage Program, Peru Cusco:
Be ready to learn from the girls!! I probably learned more from them than I expected. If you want to teach them something, be prepared to speak up. The directors and “mothers” mainly focus on the girls, not on what you’re doing. Also, bring toilet paper with you wherever you go just in case! And dress in layers. It’s April now and it’s hot one minute and raining the next. Oh and make sure you have some extra money for weekend trips other than Macchu Pichu. You should plan on staying here as long as possible. Two weeks was not long enough for me!

This has been an incredible experience. I cannot believe how fast two weeks went. I feel like I just got here. I love Cusco and my new Peruvian family. The people I’ve met here have inspired me to travel and experience more. I wish I could have stayed here longer, gotten closer to the girls, and learned more Spanish.
