Dr. Camille Bentley DO Volunteer Abroad in Nepal Medical Mission Trip Volunteers Abroad Reviews and Feedbacks http://feedback.abroaderview.org

How would you describe your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the US and in Nepal. Excellent.  Info provided prior to our departure was helpful, and Scott, Sunita and all the people in Nepal were just fantastic.   We all felt very welcomed , safe and well cared for while there.

How would you describe your overall experience?   OK, both from professional and personal aspects.  You must understand that I have performed over 30 such missions over the past 12 years.

How would you rate your accommodations: Fine, rooms were very clean, food was good and the host/hostess and support personal were excellent in trying to accommodate to our needs.  It was tough however not having any heat (though I personally was provided a space heater for my room).  Lack of electricity and fuel  made the stay a bit tough , especially at first, but we were told of the conditions prior to our arrival.  Most of the group faired well, as we just had to adjust to or new surroundings.

Most challenging: Personally for me was the cold ( lived in South Florida for 14 years, do not like cold weather very much)  and the camping experience in Kumari (I never camped in my life and do not plan on doing it in the future, well at least here in the US!!!)   I learned how far I can push myself and to be honest, quite proud of what I accomplished while there.

Suggestions:  Be prepared for rain, even in the dry season….and the cold at nite…..and drink only sealed bottled water.  I never got sick while on the trip.  The water at the house was “filtered”, however I did not drink it. Everyone who did got sick I believe from the water .   My colleague, Dr. Jill Pitcher would agree on this, as she also did not drink any water other than purchased sealed bottled. If working in Kumari again, bring a lab setup for diagnostics, bring minor surgical and would care supplies, eyedrops and Tums.  We could have provided more care with those items.   The local hospital in Kathmandu provided all the RX meds we needed, excellent. Having Camping experience is almost a must!!

Would you recommend A Broader View Volunteers:  Certainly

Would you be willing to speak to other potential volunteer or tour leaders:  Yes, willing to speak to others.

PS I do hope to return to Nepal again, despite the personal challenge to me, there is great need there, and we could really make a difference for the people there.

Judy Volunteer Abroad in Lusaka, Zambia Volunteers Abroad Reviews and Feedbacks http://feedback.abroaderview.org

My Favorite Memory: The screams of my bus after Zambia winning the Africa Cup of Nations while coming home from Livingstone during a thunderstorm.

I was surprised that…. the buses weren’t on a schedule like in Korea or the states.

The most difficult thing I experienced was…. health issues.

My best received lesson… don’t be afraid to do things on your own.

Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
Ask for help, be vocal.

Personal Paragraph (Testimonial): Going to a new country is always a good experience no matter what happens there. Getting sick became just part of the trip, and it was actually very informational to learn about the health care systems and medical resources many people have in a foreign country. Although I do regret spending a good deal of time in my room and disliked taking so much medicine over the entire course of the trip, I really had a great adventure. My favorite things, however, were not during my tourist trip down to Livingstone for a day of elephant riding and bungee jumping at Victoria falls, but the small things such as sharing a warm pumpkin with a friendly taxi driver or a man sitting next to me on a tiny bus holding a chicken that seemed to stare at me the whole way. Mastering the bus system gave me a new sense of confidence and traveling to work on my own led to so many more of these minute but exciting mini-adventures. Overall I highly recommend working with A Broader View, and advise any volunteers to come with ideas in mind on how you can do your best to help.

How would you describe your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the USA, and in-country? The staff was kind and helped me organize my flights and housing well. The volunteer schedules didn’t have much structure, but I take responsibility for not initiating projects or ideas that I had.

How would you describe/rate your accommodation ( ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc) My host family was amazingly kind and accommodating. Being sick away from home is a very hard thing, but they really made me feel comfortable and assisted me more than I could have hoped. They were so kind and had interesting things to say. I learned a lot from them and am so grateful that they opened up their home to me.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Yes
